It holds 80 contributing resources, mostly residences, commercial buildings and outbuildings built between 1829 and 1926.","why_significant":"The district reflects the prosperity of Mexico as an important rural crossroads and market community in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (Criterion A, commerce). It also contains well-preserved, representative examples of New York vernacular building traditions and distinctive period styles (Criterion C, architecture). The district retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Mexico Village Historic District covers about 18 acres in the center of the village of Mexico, Oswego County, New York, along parts of Main, Jefferson, Church and Spring Streets. It includes 80 contributing resources: 33 houses, 23 commercial buildings, 17 outbuildings and 3 structures, dating from 1829 to 1926. Main Street holds rows of attached brick commercial blocks, including Beck's Hotel, built in 1897. Four churches stand on Church Street, and the residences range from late Federal and Greek Revival houses to Italianate, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival examples, many with carriage houses. The district reflects Mexico's growth as a crossroads and market community with good mill sites. Its population peaked around the 1870s and then changed little, so little new construction followed and the historic character survives. The boundaries enclose the most intact streetscapes and leave out areas altered by new construction.","period_of_significance":"1829-1926","architect_builder":"Various","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Residences, commercial buildings and churches remain in use; many have siding changes, replacement windows or altered storefronts, but none has lost its historic appearance. A former bank is used as village offices and a former office as a museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.20622-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000528.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000528/9739d79a27-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000528/9739d79a27-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Becks_Hotel_Mexico_Village_Historic_District_Nov_09_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Becks_Hotel_Mexico_Village_Historic_District_Nov_09_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314321","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_Village_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6826233"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oswego-county/mexico-village-historic-district-91000528/"}
