It also served as the town's center of transportation in the early twentieth century, linking local farms and industries to distant markets.","narrative":"This one-story wood-frame building at 5530 Scenic Avenue in Mexico, New York, served as the village railroad depot. It was built in 1905, immediately after fire destroyed the original depot, and replicated that structure's form and details. Measuring 40 by 100 feet, it has a broad hip roof with wide overhanging eaves, carved knee braces, exposed rafter ends and several siding patterns, all hallmarks of the Stick style. The passenger waiting room and ticket office occupy the west end, with a freight room taking up the rest. A board-and-batten privy from the same period also survives. The Rome-Oswego Railroad reached Mexico in 1866 and carried lumber, cheese, beans, apples and other goods, as well as tourists bound for summer resorts on Mexico Point. Service ended in 1946. The depot is the only intact historic building tied to that line in Mexico and a reminder of the town's agricultural and industrial past.","period_of_significance":"1905-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stick/Eastlake","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The railroad tracks have been removed, but the right-of-way is still evident beside the depot. The building is listed with a current function of commerce/trade-business.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.823581-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000523.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314329","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6826223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oswego-county/mexico-railroad-depot-91000523/"}
