It is also tied to Peter Anthony Van Bergen, a local official and state senator, and his son Anthony A. Van Bergen, a justice of the peace and a leading advocate of scientific farming who served as president of the New York State Agricultural Society.","narrative":"Set on a hill at the southern edge of New Baltimore, this stone house was built about 1786 by Thomas Houghtaling as part of his daughter Hester's dowry when she married Peter Anthony Van Bergen. About 1820 the dwelling was doubled in size with a western addition, and the roof was reworked into its present hipped form. The result is a two-story, five-by-four bay house with symmetrical windows, slate roofing, and an Ionic-columned entrance porch. Inside, a center hall plan survives along with wide plank floors, paneled doors and some mantels. A stone smokehouse also remains on the property. The house is considered a local standout of Federal-period stone architecture, blending Dutch traditions with New England influences. It is also linked to two prominent owners. Peter Anthony Van Bergen served as assistant judge and state senator. His son Anthony A. Van Bergen promoted scientific farming and led the New York State Agricultural Society and the Greene County Agricultural Society.","period_of_significance":"1786-1847","architect_builder":"Thomas Houghtaling","architectural_style":"Federal Era","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function are both listed as residence; the former carriage house has been converted into a guest cottage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.277414-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000444.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000444/55af723507-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000444/55af723507-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Van_Bergen_House_11-10-2016.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Van_Bergen_House_11-10-2016.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318071","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Bergen_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7913146"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/van-bergen-house-91000444/"}
