The 1840s main block retains a high degree of integrity, along with interior features from the Greek Revival and 1912 Colonial Revival periods. Possible historical significance under Criterion A was noted but not justified.","narrative":"Avon Inn is a large two-story frame building on East Main Street in Avon, Livingston County, New York, along U.S. Route 20 one block east of the village green. Built in the 1840s as a private residence, it features a cubic main block with a nearly flat hipped roof and a monumental two-story portico of fluted Ionic columns. The entrance, with sidelights, transom, carved egg-and-dart moldings and a shell-motif medallion, was measured and drawn by architect Carl F. Schmidt. In 1882 the house became a sanitarium during Avon's mineral springs era, gaining a third story and a side wing. In 1912 it was converted into an inn and restaurant, and the Colonial Revival dining room dates from then. A 1979 fire destroyed the third story and damaged the side wing, so only the main block contributes to its architectural significance. The inn still operates as a restaurant and lodging place.","period_of_significance":"1840s - 1912","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival; 20th Century Revival/Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Continues to operate as a restaurant and lodging facility; the west side wing, damaged in a 1979 fire, is non-historic.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.205038-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000423.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000423/0f4c558476-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000423/0f4c558476-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from now in Binghamton, NY","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Avon_Inn_Aug_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from now in Binghamton, NY</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Avon_Inn_Aug_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100007683","name":"Avon Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/avon-village-historic-district-100007683/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318610","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avon_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4829210"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/avon-inn-91000423/"}
