It was rebuilt in 1892 after a fire, on the core of an 1870 Italianate house, and sits with two 1920s-30s garages.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be significant under Criteria A, B and C. It represents Leetonia's rise as a coal and iron industrial center and was the home of capitalist Charles Nelson Schmick. It is also the grandest and most intact local example of high-style Queen Anne architecture.","narrative":"Built on the bones of an 1870 Italianate house, this sixteen-room Queen Anne residence at 110 Walnut Street in Leetonia, Ohio, was rebuilt after a fire in January 1892. Salem contractors Joseph P. Morland and John Test supervised the work, which added a third floor, a corner tower, a porte cochere and a fish-scale shingled upper story. Inside are oak and mahogany woodwork, half-timbered ceilings, parquet floors and colored, etched and bevelled glass. The designer is unknown. The house was home to Charles Nelson Schmick, an officer of the Cherry Valley Iron Company and a founder of the bank that became the First National Bank of Leetonia. He also served as postmaster and took part in church, school and Democratic Party affairs. Leetonia grew from a single farmhouse in 1865 into an iron and coal boom town, and this residence symbolizes that industrial wealth. It is considered the most outstanding of the town's 15 to 20 Queen Anne houses and is relatively unaltered.","period_of_significance":"1874-1900","architect_builder":"Unknown Architect; Builders: Moreland & Test-Salem, Ohio","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; major preservation maintenance was carried out in 1988-90.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:15.222458-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/91000250.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000250/5f6efe3cc5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000250/5f6efe3cc5-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Nelson_Schmick_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Nelson_Schmick_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987232","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Nelson_Schmick_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5081223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/columbiana-county/schmick-charles-nelson-house-91000250/"}
