It was designed in 1899 by Stanford White and built in 1900-02 as the entrance to Clarence Mackay's Harbor Hill estate.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is architecturally significant as a fine example of Stanford White's country estate work and as a rare survivor of a once common estate building type. It was designed as a miniature version of the demolished Harbor Hill mansion, in French Baroque style. It is one of three surviving outbuildings from one of Long Island's largest estates.","narrative":"Guarding the northeast corner of Harbor Hill Road and Roslyn Road in East Hills, this small limestone gate lodge once marked the entrance to Clarence Mackay's Harbor Hill estate. Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White designed it in 1899, and it was built in 1900-02 with the same stone and slate roofing as the main house. From the road it appears symmetrical, with a central carriage entrance, Doric piers, ornate wrought-iron gates and two lodges under steep mansard and pyramidal slate roofs. The north wing housed the gatekeeper. The lodge was conceived as a miniature of the French Baroque mansion behind it, announcing the estate's grandeur from the public road. The mansion was demolished in 1947, and the land became the East Hills subdivision after 1954. The lodge survives as a rare example of a once common Long Island estate building and is now used by a swim club.","period_of_significance":"1899-1902","architect_builder":"Stanford White (McKim, Mead & White)","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th century revivals (French Baroque)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Now part of a private swimming club; a non-contributing swimming pool stands behind it. The building retains its integrity to a high degree.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.769085-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000240.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000240/3b3ed3a197-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000240/3b3ed3a197-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Infrastorian","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mackay_Estate_Gate_Lodge,_East_Hills,_NY_July_14,_2026_C.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Infrastorian</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mackay_Estate_Gate_Lodge,_East_Hills,_NY_July_14,_2026_C.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319143","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackay_Estate_Gate_Lodge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706859"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/mackay-estate-gate-lodge-91000240/"}
