It is the only surviving structure from the Mackay Estate's farm complex. Its strongly Japanese-inspired design is described as unusual for the period and unique in the firm's work.","narrative":"Built around 1902 as part of Clarence Mackay's Harbor Hill estate, this dairyman's cottage in East Hills is a 2 1/2-story house with a brick first floor on a rubble stone base and frame upper levels. Warren & Wetmore, the New York firm Mackay hired for the estate's farm buildings, gave it a distinctly Japanese character: steeply flaring roofs, small steep dormers, deep projecting eaves and rows of rectangular windows with flat brackets. At the rear is a brick extension with an original hay-loft door, and the unfinished attic was once the hayloft. The estate once covered more than six hundred acres and included a main house, gardens and many outbuildings. The main house, the other farm buildings and the gardens are gone, leaving this cottage as the only surviving piece of the farm complex. Such farms were recreational \"hobby farms\" rather than working operations. A 1950s subdivision now surrounds the cottage, but its exterior and interior remain largely intact, and it is still a residence.","period_of_significance":"1900-1903","architect_builder":"Warren & Wetmore","architectural_style":"Eclectic with Japanese Detail","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The intact dwelling is still used as a residence; a non-contributing brick garage from probably the 1950s stands to the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.118898-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000238.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000238/8a5420ee55-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000238/8a5420ee55-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Winter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mackay_Estate_Dairyman%27s_Cottage_2013-09-29_16-50-31.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Winter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mackay_Estate_Dairyman%27s_Cottage_2013-09-29_16-50-31.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319141","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackay_Estate_Dairyman%27s_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6724284"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/mackay-estate-dairymans-cottage-91000238/"}
