It was built in 1882 as the Washington Building and completely redesigned in 1919-21 by architect Walter B. Chambers.","why_significant":"It is presented as an intact example of a large post-World War I New York office building showing the shift from opulent, eclectic skyscraper design to restrained Neoclassicism. It is also valued as a major late work of Walter B. Chambers and for its grand ground-floor public spaces. The site is among the most historic in the city.","narrative":"Rising twelve stories across from Battery Park, One Broadway is an office building whose present look dates from 1919-21. It began in 1882 as the Queen Anne style Washington Building, designed by Edward Kendall for Cyrus W. Fields. After the International Mercantile Marine Company bought it, architect Walter B. Chambers redesigned it, building a new steel frame and a buff Indiana limestone facade with chamfered corners and a copper mansard roof. Venetian-mosaic port shields line the second floor, and relief figures of Mercury and Neptune flank the main entrance. Inside, the former booking office for the United States Lines evokes an eighteenth-century ballroom, with marble walls, black marble columns and inlaid ship compasses. The building is recognized as an intact example of the move toward restrained Neoclassicism in 1920s New York office design and as a major late work of Chambers. It also occupies a site tied to early Dutch Manhattan.","period_of_significance":"1919-21","architect_builder":"Walter B. Chambers (architect)","architectural_style":"Neoclassical / restrained Beaux-Arts","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The exterior is largely original apart from window alterations. The former booking office has been converted to a bank branch, and the office floors have been renovated.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.01546-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000108.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000108/ecd1bc3012-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000108/ecd1bc3012-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"1_Broadway_8925.JPG: Gryffindor 1_Broadway_8924.JPG: Gryffindor derivative work: Gothika (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:One_Broadway_May_2010.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">1_Broadway_8925.JPG: Gryffindor 1_Broadway_8924.JPG: Gryffindor derivative work: Gothika (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:One_Broadway_May_2010.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319646","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_Broadway","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q282931"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/international-mercantile-marine-company-building-91000108/"}
