They are also significant for their later use by the Marist Brothers, whose holdings grew into Marist College.","narrative":"Three stone buildings on the Marist College campus in Poughkeepsie are all that remain of Rosenlund, the Hudson River country estate of ironworks owner Edward Bech. The gatehouse, gardener's cottage and carriage house were built around 1865 to designs by Danish-born architect Detlef Lienau. Each is built of stone with contrasting brick trim, steep gables, decorative vergeboards and bracketed eaves typical of the Gothic Revival. The carriage house was substantially altered in 1928, when its roof was raised and its tower reworked, while the gatehouse and cottage kept most of their original exteriors. The Marist Brothers bought the property in 1908 and used the buildings for teaching, housing and administration, and their holdings grew into Marist College. The carriage house, now called Greystone, serves as the college administration building. The buildings are valued as intact examples of Gothic Revival estate architecture in a town where few such estates survive, and for their link to the college's early development.","period_of_significance":"c. 1865-1929","architect_builder":"Detlef Lienau","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in college use: the gardener's cottage (St. Peter's) houses administrative offices, the carriage house (Greystone) is the College Administration Building, and the gatehouse was formerly Marist Brothers provincial headquarters.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.926141-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91000101.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317462","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/rosenlund-estate-buildings-91000101/"}
