It is a park-based group of earthen mounds: two conical mounds, one linear mound, a turtle effigy mound and a conical mound remnant in a residential front yard.","why_significant":"The mounds are argued to be significant under Criterion C as examples of a type, period and method of construction: Late Woodland earthworks in conical, linear and turtle effigy forms. The form also marks Criterion D, since the site may yield information about the Effigy Mound tradition. The group is a surviving remnant of a much larger set of mounds recorded in the 1800s.","narrative":"Beattie Park Mound Group is a cluster of prehistoric earthworks beside the Rock River in downtown Rockford, Illinois. The surviving mounds include two conical mounds, a long linear mound and a turtle effigy mound in the park, plus the remnant of another conical mound in a front yard on Indian Terrace. Nineteenth-century surveys recorded many more, including nine conical mounds and a bird effigy, but city development destroyed them, among them one removed for a museum parking lot in the 1950s. The turtle effigy and probably the other mounds were built by people of the Effigy Mound tradition in the Late Woodland period, between about A.D. 300 and 1100. Shovel tests in 1990 found only sparse stone flakes, suggesting the mounds were built from fill brought from elsewhere. A test pit in the linear mound showed it was built in one episode from local sand. The group was listed for its distinctive mound forms and its research potential.","period_of_significance":"From about A.D. 300 to about A.D. 1100","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Effigy/Conical Mounds","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"The mounds are relatively well preserved, with some damage from foot and vehicle traffic. The park is used for outdoor recreation, and other mounds in the original group have been destroyed by city development.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.878503-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/8943/28894369/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/91000084.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000084/e34cec29ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000084/e34cec29ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rockford_Il_Beattie_Park_Mounds2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rockford_Il_Beattie_Park_Mounds2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894369","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beattie_Park_Mound_Group","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4877297"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/winnebago-county/beattie-park-mound-group-91000084/"}
