Two contributing outbuildings from about 1916, a smokehouse and a two-unit wellhouse/dairy, are also significant; the wellhouse/dairy configuration is the only one of its kind identified in the county.","narrative":"Set on a gentle rise north of Providence Road West in southern Mecklenburg County, this two-story frame farmhouse took its present form in 1916, when John Washington McKinney had an 1870s I-house remodelled and enlarged in the Colonial Revival style. The result is a cubic, double-pile house with a high hip roof of patterned slate, a hipped dormer, dentil cornices, a wraparound porch with fluted posts, and a central entrance with sidelights. Inside, the stair hall, classical mantels and simple moulded surrounds date from the remodelling. The property also keeps a ca. 1916 smokehouse and a wellhouse/dairy with two linked units, a layout not found elsewhere in the county, along with two log outbuildings from about 1875 that are counted as noncontributing. The house was listed for its architecture as an excellent local example of a Colonial Revival farmhouse, and it remains a reminder of a rural way of life that suburban development has largely replaced.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1916","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The function section lists the current use as vacant/not in use, though the history text says one of the McKinney children lives in the house. The house and outbuildings are described as in good or fair condition.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.010848-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/7182/47718223/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/91000079.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718223","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Washington_McKinney_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987053"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/mckinney-john-washington-house-91000079/"}
