It is architecturally significant as a vernacular I-house with Victorian spindlework and for its traditional outbuilding types. It is also historically significant for reflecting the agrarian way of life once common in Mecklenburg County.","narrative":"About a mile east of Huntersville, this 11-acre farmstead centers on a two-story frame I-house built in 1898 for John F. Ewart by local builder Neil Barnette, a farmer who built houses in the fall. The house has a three-bay front, brick end chimneys, a rear kitchen ell and a center gable with board-and-batten sheathing, spindlework and bargeboard. The turned-post porch survives largely intact, and the interior retains its mantels, five-panel doors and stairway, even though aluminum siding was added in the early 1960s. Behind and east of the house stand a dairy with a well canopy, a smokehouse, and two central-passage barns dating from about 1898 and 1939, plus pasture where cattle still graze. Two later buildings from about 1960 do not contribute. The farm was listed for its architecture and for its picture of a typical Mecklenburg County farm from 1898 to 1939, producing cotton, corn, wheat and livestock.","period_of_significance":"1898-1939","architect_builder":"Barnette, Neil, builder","architectural_style":"Vernacular I-house","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Farm buildings are described as relatively intact; the barns still shelter cattle and the house remains a dwelling. Outbuildings are in good or fair condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.284854-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7182/47718250/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/91000023.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718250","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Ewart_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461646"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/ewart-john-f-farm-91000023/"}
