It was built between 1783 and 1791 by an unknown builder.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the one remaining, largely unaltered local example of eighteenth-century vernacular ecclesiastical architecture. It also documents the religious life of both white and Black congregants from 1791 to 1867, and with its cemetery, spring and baptismal stream forms a rare intact eighteenth-century rural setting.","narrative":"Frying Pan Meetinghouse is a small Baptist church on a two-and-one-half-acre knoll near Floris in western Fairfax County, Virginia. Built between 1783 and 1791 by members of its congregation, it is a one-room, one-and-a-half story post-and-beam building with white clapboard walls, a standing-seam metal roof and a plain interior of high-backed wooden benches, a raised pulpit and a later balcony. It still stands on its original site beside its cemetery, spring and baptismal stream on Frying Pan Run. The property matters as the last largely unaltered local example of eighteenth-century vernacular church architecture. It also records community life from 1791 to 1867, when free and enslaved Black members worshipped, were baptized and were buried alongside white members. By 1840 the congregation had twenty-nine Black and thirty-three white members. The building was used as a hospital after the 1862 skirmish at Dranesville. Deeded to the county park authority in 1984, it is not currently open to visitors.","period_of_significance":"1783-1791; 1791-1867","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by members of the congregation)","architectural_style":"Vernacular post-and-beam","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed function is vacant/not in use; the building is owned by the Fairfax County Park Authority and is not open to the public.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.815394-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/6805/41680502/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/91000016.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000016/04c7775d67-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000016/04c7775d67-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FryingPanMeetingHouse_south.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FryingPanMeetingHouse_south.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"10000543","name":"Floris Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/floris-historic-district-10000543/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680502","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frying_Pan_Meetinghouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5506611"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fairfax/frying-pan-meetinghouse-91000016/"}
