Log outbuildings and kitchen ruins stand to the north.","why_significant":"The house combines work from several periods of Albemarle County architecture, including an early log half with beaded woodwork and a brick wing that is a fine example of transitional Federal/Greek Revival style. It is also tied to the Wallace family, among the county's earliest Scotch-Irish settlers, who have held the farm without a break.","narrative":"Piedmont is a farm in the Greenwood area of western Albemarle County, at the foot of Afton Mountain. The nominated 52 acres hold a two-part main house, a log smokehouse, a log slave house and the ruins of a large stone kitchen chimney and hearth. The older half is a stuccoed log building that may date to the late eighteenth century, with beaded board walls, pedestal chair rail and a pegged, numbered roof frame. The brick wing, traditionally dated to 1838 and built by Michael Wallace, has Flemish bond brickwork with pencilled joints, a molded brick cornice and unusual Greek Revival mantels. The property is also notable for its long ownership by the Wallace family. William Wallace came to the area in 1734 with other Scotch-Irish settlers who introduced Presbyterianism to the county. The farm remains in family hands, which is rare among Albemarle properties originally patented by early families.","period_of_significance":"1780-1900","architect_builder":"Unknown (brick wing traditionally built by Michael Wallace)","architectural_style":"Transitional Federal/Greek Revival (brick wing); log construction","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with secondary structures; the property remains in the Wallace family.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.449607-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/6793/41679323/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002184.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002184/6fa7ce41e5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002184/6fa7ce41e5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Piedmont_driveway_near_Greenwood.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Piedmont_driveway_near_Greenwood.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"11000258","name":"Greenwood-Afton Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/greenwood-afton-rural-historic-district-11000258/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679323","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piedmont_(Greenwood,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713062"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/piedmont-90002184/"}
