Its mid-nineteenth-century ell and 1908 wing show how a family adapted the home over time. The surviving log kitchen, springhouse, corncrib and cabin make it the county's finest collection of early outbuildings.","narrative":"This farm in the hills near Prices Fork, beside Tom's Creek, centers on a large two-story log house built in the early nineteenth century, possibly by Joseph McDonald or his son Jonas. The V-notched log house began as a hall-parlor dwelling facing north. About 1850 a frame ell added a center passage, a new parlor and an east-facing entrance. A wing in 1908 brought the first kitchen inside the house. Earlier, cooking took place in a separate two-story log kitchen, which still stands. Other surviving buildings include a log springhouse, a one-story log house that may once have housed enslaved workers, a double-pen log corncrib, a hammer mill and an early twentieth-century barn. The property was listed for architecture. Few houses of its form survive from the first quarter of the nineteenth century in Montgomery County, and the grouped outbuildings show how domestic and farm space changed over time. It is considered the county's finest collection of early outbuildings.","period_of_significance":"ca.1800-ca.1908","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Hall-parlor plan (later altered to a center-passage house)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current functions are both single dwelling, domestic secondary structures and agricultural outbuildings. The log house is described as well preserved despite several additions and alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.838812-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/6787/41678778/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002166.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002166/6793dbc5c7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002166/6793dbc5c7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_McDonald_Farm.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_McDonald_Farm.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678778","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_McDonald_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712644"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/mcdonald-joseph-farm-90002166/"}
