It includes a two-story frame house begun about 1870 for blacksmith Joseph T. Williams, farm outbuildings and 1930s landscape features.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the farm is an unusually well-preserved postbellum farmstead, surrounded by later suburban development. Its gable-fronted, double-pile house is rare in the Richmond area, and its farm buildings show conservative early twentieth-century building practice. The 1930s gardens and stonework, designed and built by amateur landscape designer Olin Taylor, add to its significance.","narrative":"This farmstead on Walmsley Boulevard in south Richmond preserves a group of buildings and garden features dating from about 1870 to the 1930s. The main house is a small two-story frame dwelling with a gable-fronted, two-room-deep plan, built in stages for the family of blacksmith Joseph T. Williams. Gable-fronted farmhouses were uncommon in the Richmond area, and few houses this small survive with their original detailing. Nearby are a Craftsman-style garage, a storage shed, a barn, a corncrib, a lumber shed and a poultry house. The Taylor family bought the property in 1917. In the 1930s Olin Taylor, an amateur landscape designer, built a rubblestone walled garden, a fish pool, retaining walls and concrete planters. Suburban housing from the 1950s and 1960s now surrounds the parcel. The farm was listed for its architecture and landscape architecture, as a rare surviving small farm of the postbellum and early twentieth-century period.","period_of_significance":"c1870-1940","architect_builder":"Taylor, Olin (designed and built landscape elements)","architectural_style":"Bungalow/Craftsman (garage); main house a vernacular postbellum gable-fronted farmhouse","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings; the house retains most original detailing. The poultry house is dilapidated.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.273702-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/6830/41683085/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002158.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002158/b2b502cef2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002158/b2b502cef2-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Morgan Riley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Taylor_Farm_House_Richmond_Va.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Riley</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Taylor_Farm_House_Richmond_Va.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683085","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylor_Farm_(Richmond,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15637936"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/taylor-farm-90002158/"}
