It includes a circa 1910s frame main house, a springhouse, a meathouse, a 1907 two-room schoolhouse and a family cemetery.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under Criterion C for architecture. The house is a rare example in the region of a double-pile, center-passage plan with Georgian chimney placement and finished third-floor rooms. The schoolhouse illustrates local educational practices and school building design in the early twentieth century.","narrative":"Snake Creek Farm is a small farm complex in a remote valley of northern Carroll County, Virginia, north of the crest of the Blue Ridge. Its centerpiece is a two-and-one-half-story frame house built by farmer James F. Martin soon after he bought the land in 1910. It has a double-pile, center-passage plan, a clipped gable roof with metal shingles in the gables, decorative metal cresting, and finished rooms on the third floor. Interior walls are sheathed in tongue-and-groove boards, a practice tied to a local shortage of plaster. Nearby are a springhouse, a meathouse, a family cemetery with early to mid-nineteenth-century graves, and a two-room schoolhouse that Martin had built in 1907. The school served neighborhood children until the 1950s, and Martin's second wife, Nettie, taught there. The house is considered a rarity in southwest Virginia, and the school reflects the public education system established after the Civil War.","period_of_significance":"1907-1915","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Double-pile center-passage plan (Georgian plan)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house is described as extremely well preserved. The buildings were expected to be rehabilitated for use as a bed and breakfast inn.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.257183-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/6799/41679977/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002138.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002138/7d578e4c75-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002138/7d578e4c75-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Snake_Creek_Farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Snake_Creek_Farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679977","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_Creek_Farm_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713219"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/carroll-county/snake-creek-farm-historic-district-90002138/"}
