It also qualifies under Criterion A for historic preservation, because Gay Montague Moore's 1929 purchase and restoration marked the beginning of the preservation movement in Alexandria.","narrative":"Located at 207 Prince Street in the Alexandria Historic District, this white-painted brick town house has three bays, three and a half stories and a long rear service wing. Its architecture reflects the homes of the city's wealthiest residents in the late eighteenth century. Features include an Aquia stone doorway, Flemish bond brickwork, a modillion cornice and an elliptical arch over the stair. The lot was once owned by George William Fairfax, a friend of George Washington, though the present building most likely dates from the mid-1780s, when John Harper developed the lot. Later owners included merchant William Hodgson. The house is also significant for preservation. In 1929 Gay Montague Moore bought and restored it, becoming the first person to restore a historic house in Alexandria. She went on to found the Alexandria Association and write a history of the city. Her work helped lead to the district's designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. The house remains a single-family home in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1785-1940","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and well maintained; used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.652088-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/6794/41679438/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002113.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002113/2527750487-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002113/2527750487-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairfax-Moore_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairfax-Moore_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000928","name":"Alexandria Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/alexandria-historic-district-66000928/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679438","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairfax%E2%80%93Moore_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5430144"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/alexandria/fairfax-moore-house-90002113/"}
