They are also unusual Queen Anne residences that use slate extensively and decoratively, inside and out, as showpieces of the quarryman's art.","narrative":"Bryn Arvon and Gwyn Arvon are two Queen Anne houses on a wooded tract beside the slate quarries of Arvonia, Virginia. Welsh immigrant brothers Evan and John Williams, owners of the Williams Slate Company, built them in 1891-1892. Evan lived in Bryn Arvon, while John used Gwyn Arvon during his visits from Richmond. Both houses rest on stacked slate foundations, with weatherboard on the first floor and slate shingles on the second floor and roof. Red slate from Vermont and green from Pennsylvania form decorative patterns against the local blue-black stone. Inside, slate appears in mantels, baseboards, wainscoting, stair treads and even kitchen sinks. Bryn Arvon has a corner tower, while Gwyn Arvon is slightly larger and received a rear addition in 1915 as separate quarters for a relative. The property also includes a shared water tower, a pump house, a barn, a garage and slate entrance piers. The houses were listed for their link to Buckingham County's slate industry and for their unusual use of slate.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1891-1915","architect_builder":"Builders Evan Robert Williams and John Robert Williams; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Both houses are listed with a current function of single dwellings, along with secondary structures and agricultural outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.829859-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/94/6798/41679894/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002111.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002111/766c0d6113-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002111/766c0d6113-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gwyn_Arvon_through_the_trees.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gwyn_Arvon_through_the_trees.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679894","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryn_Arvon_and_Gwyn_Arvon","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712096"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/buckingham-county/bryn-arvon-and-gwyn-arvon-90002111/"}
