It also has local historical significance through its builder and original owner, Dr. Thomas Bailey Greer, a prominent physician and member of the first Virginia Medical Examining Board from a leading Franklin County family.","narrative":"Dr. Thomas Bailey Greer began this two-story Greek Revival house in Rocky Mount in 1861. Work stopped during the Civil War and the house was finished soon after. Built of wood frame on a brick foundation, it has a low hipped metal roof, six-over-six windows with louvered blinds, and a north entrance with sidelights, a transom and a Doric-columned porch. Inside, wide pine floors, Doric mantels, dentiled cornices and an open-string stair survive. The original T-shaped plan was later filled in by three additions on the east side, the last in 1988. The house is listed for its architecture, as a good local example of late Greek Revival design that has seen only minor alteration during continuous occupancy. It also reflects the standing of Greer, a physician who served on Virginia's first State Medical Examining Board and came from a prominent county family. The house stayed in the Greer family until 1985.","period_of_significance":"1861-1922","architect_builder":"Thomas Bailey Greer","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form notes continuous inhabitation and a 1988 rear addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.89909-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/6807/41680742/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002011.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002011/efb7e02715-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002011/efb7e02715-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greer_House_in_Rocky_Mount.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greer_House_in_Rocky_Mount.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99000683","name":"Rocky Mount Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/rocky-mount-historic-district-99000683/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680742","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712410"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/franklin/greer-house-90002011/"}
