It holds 45 contributing and 4 noncontributing buildings plus one contributing archaeological site, mostly late 19th and early 20th century.","why_significant":"The district is significant under criteria C and D as a well-preserved collection of domestic, religious and educational buildings showing the growth of Christiansburg. It includes the Barnett-Montague House, the town's earliest house, whose test excavations revealed a deep, artifact-rich early to mid-19th-century midden. The streetscape is unified by early 20th-century stone and concrete retaining walls.","narrative":"On a hill northeast of Christiansburg's original town, this twenty-acre neighborhood follows the old road to Salem along East Main and Park Streets. It holds mostly late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century houses in Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Foursquare, Craftsman and bungalow styles, with a row of brick bungalows on Pepper Street. Two early log houses, a Gothic Revival Episcopal church, the former high school and an elementary school add variety. The oldest building is the Barnett-Montague House, a log and frame dwelling later owned by Rice D. Montague, who gave land for the railroad station. Test excavations in its yard found a deep midden of early to mid-nineteenth-century ceramics and other artifacts. After the Lee Highway bypassed the road in the early twentieth century, the area became a quiet residential backwater. Stone and concrete retaining walls along East Main Street tie the streetscape together. The district was listed for its architecture and archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":"c. 1800-1930s","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne; Late 19th and 20th century revivals: Colonial Revival; Other: center-passage plan","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Described as intact and well preserved, moderately threatened by apartment and commercial development; it continues to serve as a home to families and institutions. The former high school has been converted to apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.241541-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/6788/41678830/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002008.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002008/3ba0026f77-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002008/3ba0026f77-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"AstaPro5","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_School_House_Christiansburg_VA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">AstaPro5</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_School_House_Christiansburg_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678830","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Main_Street_Historic_District_(Christiansburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712264"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/east-main-street-historic-district-90002008/"}
