The historic district covers about 22 acres and includes frame center-passage houses, churches, stores, a brick bank and a mill, nearly all built between the mid-1800s and the 1920s. Notable buildings include the Greek Revival Jonathan E. Hall House with its later store addition, the ornate Dr. Stone Farm house, the 1885 Auburn Methodist Church, the 1912-13 Bank of Riner and the Surface Mill of about 1910. The village began as an unplanned settlement known as Five Points, later Auburn, and was renamed Riner in 1882. It served as a commercial, religious and milling center for the surrounding farm country and reached its peak in the 1910s. The district was recognized for the collective vernacular architecture of its buildings, whose alterations have not compromised their form, materials or relationships to one another.","period_of_significance":"1850-1920s","architect_builder":"Kinsey, John M. - builder","architectural_style":"Mid-19th century Greek Revival; late 19th- and early 20th-century commercial; center-passage-plan dwellings","criteria":["C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.322185-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/6787/41678772/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002006.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002006/816d2b1075-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002006/816d2b1075-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riner_Historic_District.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riner_Historic_District.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678772","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riner_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713134"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/riner-historic-district-90002006/"}
