It was built for merchant William Walker by his brother James Walker.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a well-preserved example of Jeffersonian residential architecture in southern Albemarle County. It was built by James Walker, a millwright and carpenter employed by Thomas Jefferson, and shows strong Jeffersonian and Palladian influence in its plan and massing. No proof links Jefferson to the design, but of similar Albemarle houses it is the least altered.","narrative":"Built between 1803 and 1805 in the former river port of Warren, this one-story brick house sits on a high English basement and is topped by a hipped roof. Merchant William Walker commissioned it, and his brother James Walker, who worked for Thomas Jefferson as a millwright and carpenter, oversaw construction. A pedimented portico with brick piers marks the south front, and the interior centers on a hall flanked by two bedrooms, with a full-width salon at the north end. Much original woodwork survives, including six mantels, chair rails and trim. Nineteenth-century porches and additions were later removed, and a small brick service wing was added in 1978. Although no evidence ties Jefferson to the design, the house reflects his influence and Palladian ideas, and it is considered one of the purest small-scale examples of Jeffersonian residential design in Albemarle County. It remains a private home.","period_of_significance":"1803-1805","architect_builder":"Walker, James","architectural_style":"Early Republic - Early Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the form describes both interior and exterior as in excellent condition, restored to early-nineteenth-century appearance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.73248-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/57/6792/41679257/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90002001.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002001/a1365c1391-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90002001/a1365c1391-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walker_House_near_Warren.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walker_House_near_Warren.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07001236","name":"Southern Albemarle Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/southern-albemarle-rural-historic-district-07001236/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679257","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walker_House_(Warren,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713487"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/walker-house-90002001/"}
