Its main house is a two-and-one-half-story, five-bay Greek Revival dwelling on a raised basement, begun around 1848 by William T. Brown after an earlier house burned in 1845. It rises from older foundations and is covered with weatherboards under a hipped roof. A balustraded belvedere, a vase-shaped newel post and Greek Revival mantels are among its notable features. The grounds hold a detached kitchen, an icehouse, a springhouse, the ruins of three slave quarters, a slave cemetery and the Brown family cemetery. Brown once farmed about four thousand acres here with the labor of some thirty enslaved people. The property now covers about seventy-eight acres and is no longer farmed. It was recognized for its architecture, its minor alterations and its intact rural setting, with a significance period of 1848 to 1876, the year of Brown's death.","period_of_significance":"1848-1876","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a single dwelling with secondary structures and cemeteries. The tract is no longer farmed and the icehouse is being renovated as a guest house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.645451-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/6792/41679285/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90001997.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001997/8ab4d8717d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001997/8ab4d8717d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Fair_from_the_east.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Fair_from_the_east.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679285","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Fair","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712908"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/mount-fair-90001997/"}
