It also includes a stone summer kitchen, a family cemetery and several later outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the property is a well-preserved example of an early-nineteenth-century upper Piedmont farm dwelling, typical of those built by prosperous farmers in Rappahannock County. It retains much of its architectural integrity and its rural setting. It also reflects John Dearing's move to the Blue Ridge at age sixty.","narrative":"Caledonia Farm occupies 52 acres of rolling pasture in the Blue Ridge foothills near Flint Hill, Rappahannock County. Its main building is a three-bay, two-story fieldstone house dated 1812 by inscriptions on its chimneys. John Dearing, a Revolutionary War militia officer, had it built after moving from Fauquier County at age sixty. A detached stone summer kitchen, now a guest house, stands to the north, and a stone-walled family cemetery with about twenty-six graves lies to the southwest. The house stood empty from 1948 to 1963 and was rehabilitated in the 1960s, when a rear ell was added and the kitchen was joined to the house by a breezeway. Interior features include corner fireplaces in the south rooms and a parlor mantel attributed to Hessian craftsmen. The property was found significant as a well-preserved early-nineteenth-century farm dwelling that keeps its architectural character and its open agricultural setting. Dearing's descendants held the farm until the mid-twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1812-1939","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored by two successive owners after standing vacant from 1948 to 1963; currently a single dwelling that also operates as a bed-and-breakfast, with cattle still grazing the pastures.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.179787-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/6828/41682821/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90001996.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001996/71775cfd38-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001996/71775cfd38-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"self","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caledonia_Farm_at_dusk2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">self</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caledonia_Farm_at_dusk2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682821","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonia_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15206842"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rappahannock-county/caledonia-farm-90001996/"}
