An older c.1815 Federal house was enclosed within an Italianate expansion built about 1855, attributed to Jacob Holt, with three outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a unique example of the Greco-Italianate style of builder Jacob Holt and his school, which dominated Warren County before the Civil War. It is unusual for its front cross-hall and side wings and for being an 1850s expansion that left an earlier house largely intact. The porch, entrance and extensive marbleizing and woodgraining are also cited.","narrative":"Set on a low hillock among overgrown fields south of Warrenton, this frame plantation house combines two building periods. A simple Federal house of about 1815 forms the rear portion, while around 1855 an ornate Greco-Italianate house, attributed to builder Jacob Holt, was constructed in front of it and around it. The front block has a deep cross hall, one-story wings, bracketed eaves, and a richly detailed porch and double-door entrance. Inside, extensive marbleizing and woodgraining decorate the front rooms, while the rear rooms keep restrained Georgian and Federal finishes, including a reeded Federal mantel. Three outbuildings survive: a brace-frame smokehouse, a round-log corncrib and a brick carriage house. The house was built for John Watson, who expanded a 268-acre inheritance into a plantation of 2,143 acres. It was listed for its architecture, as a rare surviving example of Holt combining old and new construction. Years of neglect have left it deteriorated but largely intact.","period_of_significance":"c.1855","architect_builder":"Holt, Jacob (attributed to)","architectural_style":"Italianate; Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; the form describes it as deteriorated from years of neglect, though nearly all original fabric survives, and says new owners plan restoration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.176277-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/7227/47722714/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/90001954.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722714","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Watson_House_(Warrenton,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707997"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/warren-county/watson-john-house-90001954/"}
