Hammersmith.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a unique architectural hybrid of late-Victorian eclecticism, combining Queen Anne, Eastlake and Shingle Style influences. Its arched bargeboards and twin gambrel roofs are atypical for the period. It also shows an awareness of northeastern Shingle Style development that is rarely seen in Texas houses of its time.","narrative":"Built about 1890 at 520 South Main in Belton, this one-story, H-plan frame house combines several late-Victorian styles. Two projecting wings carry gambrel-style shingled hoods, cut away in arches to form curved bargeboards with scalloped edges. Between the wings, a porch has milled brackets, a geometric balustrade and columns with shingled, battered bases. Walls are weatherboard, windows are one-over-one with corbeled hood molds and shutters, and a multi-light transom sits above the entry. The house was probably built for John P. Hammersmith by his father Peter, a shoe merchant and partner in the local New Lumber Company, and was deeded to John in 1895. It was sold in 1899 to Frances Meyer Clark, and her family kept it until 1970. It is considered significant as a vernacular blend of Queen Anne, Eastlake and Shingle influences, unusual among Texas houses of its era and in contrast to the more sophisticated Queen Anne homes on North Main Street.","period_of_significance":"C. 1890","architect_builder":"New Lumber Company ?","architectural_style":"Queen Anne Eclectic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition with only minor alterations; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.922469-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/9682/40968249/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90001883.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001883/ea840c5b4d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001883/ea840c5b4d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_P._Hammersmith_House,_Belton,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_P._Hammersmith_House,_Belton,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968249","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000866"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bell-county/hammersmith-john-p-house-90001883/"}
