A small late eighteenth-century section was joined by a larger west addition built in 1825.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Marl Hill is architecturally significant as a good, well-preserved example of a once-typical vernacular house form: a small eighteenth-century single-room house with a later addition. It combines Federal and Greek Revival features, including fine built-in cupboards flanking a second-floor fireplace. Surviving outbuildings, a well and an unchanged rural setting add to its integrity.","narrative":"Marl Hill is a two-story, five-bay frame house on about forty acres beside St. Peter's Church in rural New Kent County, Virginia. It was built in two stages: a small, two-bay section from the late eighteenth century and a larger three-bay west addition raised in 1825. Weatherboard siding, a seven-course American bond brick foundation forming a raised basement, and a tin roof cover the combined structure. Inside, the older section has wainscoting, hand-hewn hardwood floor joists, some still bearing bark, and double closets with six-panel doors beside a second-floor fireplace. The addition has a Greek Revival mantel. A shed, woodshed, smokehouse, pumphouse, root cellar and a well survive in the yard, and boxwoods remain. The property was named for marl once mined in the surrounding fields and was long held by the Crump family. It was listed as a well-preserved vernacular dwelling that shows how an early small house was enlarged, with its rural setting largely unchanged.","period_of_significance":"c1775-1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal; Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling with secondary structures; the nomination describes the property as retaining a very high degree of integrity and few alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.973711-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/6820/41682038/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/90001832.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001832/601be91584-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001832/601be91584-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MARL_HILL,_TALLEYSVILLE,_NEW_KENT_COUNTY,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682038","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marl_Hill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712786"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/new-kent-county/marl-hill-90001832/"}
