The nomination expands the courthouse's 1971 individual listing to the whole square.","why_significant":"The square is a well-preserved Texas courthouse square that is unusual for grouping several public buildings on the same block as the courthouse. Its courthouse, jail and Records Building show distinct architectural influences, supporting significance in architecture. As the county's governmental center for a century, it is also significant in politics and government.","narrative":"Center's courthouse square in deep East Texas is a full block set aside when the town was platted in 1869. At its heart is the 1885 Shelby County Courthouse, a red brick Romanesque Revival building with small buttresses, turrets and detailed brickwork, designed and built by local brickmaker J.J.E. Gibson. Beside it stand the 1885 jail, expanded in the 1930s, and a 1913 Classical Revival Records Building in two colors of brick. A fire station, bandstand, restroom building, clock and several monuments are later additions. The courthouse alone was listed in 1971; this expansion covers the whole square. The block is considered significant because county leaders kept adding public buildings to it, which is unusual in Texas, where jails and offices usually sit off the square. It also reflects a century as the center of county government and shows three distinct architectural approaches side by side.","period_of_significance":"1885-1940","architect_builder":"J.J.E.
