Fellows of Auburn.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the library is significant in architecture as a well-preserved, unaltered Classical Revival civic building. Its brick, terra cotta and roof tile came from the local Gladding McBean pottery, which donated $2,475 in materials to make construction possible. It also reflects social history: it was funded by a Carnegie grant and is the only Carnegie library in Placer County still serving as a library.","narrative":"Built in 1909 at 590 Fifth Street, the Lincoln Carnegie Library is a small, nearly cubical building of rosy brick trimmed with reddish terra cotta, set on a high raised basement under a tile hipped roof. Round-arched windows and a central arched entrance, framed by fitted terra cotta blocks with a keystone, give the modest structure a Classical Revival character. Its materials came from the Gladding McBean pottery a few blocks away. Lincoln's request for a $6,000 Carnegie grant was approved in December 1907. When the lowest construction bid exceeded the grant, the pottery donated $2,475 in brick, tile and terra cotta. Residents raised $2,000 to buy the site. Auburn architect A.D. Fellows designed the building, and the cornerstone was laid on April 3, 1909. Apart from handrails added to the steps, it remains unchanged inside and out. Of the Carnegie libraries in Placer County, only Lincoln's still operates as a library, which supports its local importance in architecture and social history.","period_of_significance":"1909-1921","architect_builder":"Fellows, Allen D.","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as the Lincoln Public Library and described as unaltered except for handrails added to the steep stairs.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.580038-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/90001814.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001814/79089c7b3d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001814/79089c7b3d-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"TheAriAlvarez","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_Carnegie_Library_(98126).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">TheAriAlvarez</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_Carnegie_Library_(98126).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857726","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q58055491"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/placer-county/lincoln-public-library-90001814/"}
