It typifies small-town post offices built under Supervising Architect James Knox Taylor, using high-quality materials and a monumental Neo-Classical design. It is also one of two Neo-Classical buildings in Marion.","narrative":"Built between 1909 and 1910 at 169 East Church Street, the Old Marion Post Office is a two-story Neo-Classical building with an attic, set on a raised grass plateau behind granite retaining walls. It has a granite foundation, limestone walls carved with floral swags and eagle-and-shield reliefs, a portico of six fluted Ionic columns, and a red-orange clay tile mansard roof over a reinforced concrete structure. Inside, the lobby has carved oak woodwork, terrazzo and marble floors, and ornate plaster cornices. Congress appropriated $75,000 for it in 1906, and an addition on the south side followed in 1924 and was remodeled in 1937. It is the only federal building in Marion County and reflects the building policies of Supervising Architect James Knox Taylor, who favored durable materials and classical designs for small-town post offices. Postal operations ended there in 1988, and the Marion County Historical Society now uses it as its headquarters and museum.","period_of_significance":"1910-1940","architect_builder":"Architect: James Knox Taylor; Builder: John W.
