It was designed by the Boston firm of Woodbury and Stuart.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an excellent, intact example of Tudor Revival architecture and the only one among the seven churches in central Clinton. It also reflects the growth of the town's Methodist community and the town's development around Central Park. It is of local significance under Criteria A and C, with Criteria Consideration A for religious properties.","narrative":"Built in 1926 on Walnut Street beside Central Park in Clinton, Massachusetts, this L-shaped building was meant to be only part of a larger Methodist church. Boston architects Daniel Howard Woodbury and George P. Stuart designed it in the Tudor Revival style, with a cobblestone first story, stucco upper walls, half-timbering, a crenellated entry porch and a steep slate roof. A Colonial Revival rectory and a small garage were built on the same lot. The congregation raised funds through weekly pledges after selling its High Street church, but money ran out before the formal worship wing was constructed. A community hall and gymnasium served as the sanctuary until the Methodists left the building in the 1980s. It is the only Tudor Revival church among seven in central Clinton and kept its original design elements. After a rehabilitation that changed the plan very little, it now serves as a two-family residence and an office.","period_of_significance":"1926-1940","architect_builder":"Woodbury, Daniel Howard; Stuart, George P.","architectural_style":"Late 19th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival; Tudor Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in the 1980s under the historic preservation certification process; currently used as a two-family residence and an office.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.544998-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/7973/63797364/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/90001720.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001720/069cbe0419-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001720/069cbe0419-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Second_Meeting_House_of_the_United_Methodists,_Clinton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Second_Meeting_House_of_the_United_Methodists,_Clinton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797364","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Methodist_Church_(Clinton,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453270"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/first-methodist-church-90001720/"}
