It was dedicated on June 1, 1930, in Spanish Colonial Revival style.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the Inn was the social and entertainment center of Oroville and the surrounding area from 1930 (Criterion A). It is also one of three remaining Spanish Colonial Revival examples in the community (Criterion C). It remains the tallest hotel in continuous operation between Sacramento and the Oregon border.","narrative":"Rising five stories above downtown Oroville, this Spanish Colonial Revival hotel at 2066 Bird Street was dedicated on June 1, 1930. Built of reinforced concrete with stucco and terra cotta trim, it sits back from the street behind a carriage driveway entered through an ornate wrought-iron arch. Inside, the lobby has high-beamed ceilings, stucco columns, original chandeliers and a mezzanine with a wood railing. George A. Applegarth is named as architect. The hotel quickly became the town's social and entertainment center, hosting visitors, business luncheons and banquets tied to the Oroville Dam project. It had a water-fall air-conditioning system, central heating and the city's first passenger elevator. A 1989 refurbishment converted the original guest rooms into apartments while keeping the woodwork. It remains the tallest hotel in continuous operation between Sacramento and the Oregon border, and it is one of three surviving Spanish Colonial Revival buildings in the community.","period_of_significance":"1930-1940","architect_builder":"Applegarth, George A.","architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use and recently restored; the original 92 guest rooms were converted into two-room apartments with kitchenettes for permanent guests, and a restaurant operates on site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.778402-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/90001431.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001431/85277284cf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001431/85277284cf-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oroville_Inn_from_SE_2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oroville_Inn_from_SE_2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858445","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133259250"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/butte-county/oroville-inn-90001431/"}
