It dates from about 1880.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant under criteria A and C as an integral part of Lancaster City's late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century cigar leaf tobacco processing and storage industry. It is presented as representative of a large body of industrial buildings of the period and as an example of a front-gabled tobacco building with a rectangular plan bisected by a longitudinal brick wall.","narrative":"Built about 1880 as a tobacco warehouse on the south side of New Holland Avenue in Lancaster, this one-and-one-half story brick building has a front-gabled north facade over a high basement, a rectangular plan, and an interior north-south brick wall that divides the space into two portions. The 1886 Sanborn map records it under the Basch & Fisher Tobacco Warehouse name. By 1897 it had been divided in two, and John Himmen, a tobacco sweating, or curing, operator, occupied it. Andrew H. Hershey used the eastern portion for his leaf tobacco warehouse around 1912, and Jacob Bowman, a tobacco leaf broker and importer, was an occupant in 1931. The building remained in tobacco use into the 1940s. It is regarded as representative of Lancaster's late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century cigar leaf tobacco industry, which was central to the city's economy. A heater room was added around 1935 and a garage around 1950.","period_of_significance":"c.1880-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Undergoing renovations to convert it to apartments and an office; some window openings and brickwork have been altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.12389-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/90001399.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001399/2ac9338340-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001399/2ac9338340-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Basch_and_Fisher.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Basch_and_Fisher.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000956","name":"Lancaster City Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lancaster-city-historic-district-01000956/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993277","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basch_%26_Fisher_Tobacco_Warehouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4866320"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/basch-and-fisher-tobacco-warehouse-90001399/"}
