The south building dates from 1907 and the north building from about 1910.","why_significant":"The buildings are significant under criteria A and C as an integral part of Lancaster City's late nineteenth and early twentieth century tobacco processing and storage industry. They are very good examples of large, flat-roofed tobacco warehouses of the first quarter of the twentieth century and represent the growing involvement of national cigar companies in the local industry.","narrative":"Two brick tobacco warehouses stand side by side at the southwest corner of North Prince and West Ross Streets in Lancaster. The south building was erected in 1907 by the Federal Cigar Real Estate Co., a subsidiary of the American Cigar Co., and the north building followed about 1910. Both are laid in common bond over stone foundations, and the south building is fireproof, with concrete floors and roof, divided into three warehouse areas by fire walls. The north building was raised from one story to two around 1925, and a rear addition extends both buildings to about 300 feet in depth. The company office occupies the east end of the north building, fronting North Prince Street. Both warehouses are regarded as very good examples of the large, flat-roofed tobacco buildings of the early twentieth century. They were designed for the processing and storage needs of a corporation with out-of-town ownership, and they reflect Lancaster City's tobacco industry at its height. The buildings have been in continuous tobacco use since they were built.","period_of_significance":"1907-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Operating; the south building is used for storage of chewing tobacco and is a U.S. Customs and bonded warehouse, and the north building's remainder stores tobacco.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.372527-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/90001398.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001398/87a707b615-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001398/87a707b615-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:820_N_Prince_Lancaster_PA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:820_N_Prince_Lancaster_PA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000956","name":"Lancaster City Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lancaster-city-historic-district-01000956/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993275","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American/Consolidated_Tobacco_Companies_buildings","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4742841"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/american-consolidated-tobacco-companies-90001398/"}
