It is set on sloping ground above a high basement and has a slate-covered side-gabled roof.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant as part of Lancaster City's late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century cigar leaf tobacco processing and storage industry. It is presented as a good example of the side-gabled late-nineteenth-century version of tobacco warehouse design and as representative of a larger group of industrial buildings of the period in the city.","narrative":"Built about 1880 at the corner of North Plum and East Walnut Streets in Lancaster, this six-bay by three-bay brick warehouse rises two and a half stories above a high basement, with a slate side-gabled roof and four gabled dormers on its south facade. It was built to store and process cigar leaf tobacco, an important industry in the city during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sanborn maps record it as the warehouse of Edward McGovern in 1886, and later as a leaf tobacco warehouse run by Arenot & Fricant and then Charles S. Brenneman. A one-story heater room with a smokestack was added about 1910, and a brick addition containing tobacco dryers was built on the west side about 1939. The building is regarded as a good example of its type and as typical of the industrial buildings of its period in Lancaster City. Its original openings, sash, roof and wall construction are largely intact.","period_of_significance":"c.1880-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Retains very good integrity apart from stucco covering on the east elevation; occupied as a leaf tobacco warehouse in later decades, with a tobacco dryer addition of about 1939.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:38.089108-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/90001395.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001395/d4ea93314d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001395/d4ea93314d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McGovern_Warehouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McGovern_Warehouse.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000956","name":"Lancaster City Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lancaster-city-historic-district-01000956/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993269","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_McGovern_Tobacco_Warehouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5344402"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/mcgovern-edward-tobacco-warehouse-90001395/"}
