The buildings date from 1874 to about 1881 and were used for processing and storing cigar leaf tobacco.","why_significant":"The district is significant as part of one of Lancaster City's major late nineteenth and early twentieth century industries, the processing and storage of cigar leaf tobacco. Its buildings show the range of roof forms available within the tobacco warehouse type of the period, including end-gabled, gambrel and flat roofs. It is also an intact group of warehouses whose locations were tied to nearby railroad lines.","narrative":"Four brick tobacco warehouses built between 1874 and about 1881 stand on a triangle of land east of North Mulberry Street and on the west side of the street in northwest Lancaster City. Buildings A, B and C were erected by C. August Bitner, who ran a fast freight line between Lancaster and Philadelphia, and they sat beside a Reading & Columbia railroad siding. Building D, a double warehouse with a gambrel slate roof, was built by G. Falk about 1881 and later divided between two owners. The warehouses use common-bond brick over stone foundations, with segmental-arched windows, corbelled cornices and raised basements. Building A was raised from two to three stories and given a flat roof, and Building B gained a restaurant-style front in the late 1970s. The buildings were leased to leaf tobacco firms through the early twentieth century, and the group is regarded as an intact example of this industrial building type in the city.","period_of_significance":"C. 1874-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Building A is a warehouse, Building B is a pizza shop, Building C is used by a candlemaking business, and Building D is used for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.812535-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/90001393.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001393/c69b7ea0ab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001393/c69b7ea0ab-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lancaster_Arts_Hotel.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lancaster_Arts_Hotel.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000956","name":"Lancaster City Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lancaster-city-historic-district-01000956/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993265","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrisburg_Avenue_Tobacco_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15223089"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/harrisburg-avenue-tobacco-historic-district-90001393/"}
