It stands about 200 feet north of Harrisburg Avenue, near North Mulberry Street, and was constructed for the C. A. Bitner estate, which leased it in 1886 to Henry B. Friedman. The building is valued as an example of Lancaster's late nineteenth and early twentieth century cigar leaf tobacco industry, which processed and stored leaf for local manufacturers. It is also a good surviving example of the low, end-gabled tobacco warehouses built across the city in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Later lessees included Elias Bach & Sons, beginning in 1904, and Allen R. Cressman Sons and Otto Eisenlohr Co. in the 1916-1925 period. Of the four Bitner tobacco buildings on the north side of Harrisburg Avenue, it is the only one that survives.","period_of_significance":"c.1880-1925","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Presently used for storage; a honey processing company previously occupied it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:37.45602-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/90001392.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001392/17b350a414-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001392/17b350a414-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_B._Friedman_La_PA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_B._Friedman_La_PA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000956","name":"Lancaster City Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lancaster-city-historic-district-01000956/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993263","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_B._Friedman_Tobacco_Warehouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5717604"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/friedman-henry-b-tobacco-warehouse-90001392/"}
