Most buildings date from the late 1920s.","why_significant":"The district is significant under Criterion A for its role in the commerce of Point Arena. Most contributing buildings were built right after the great 1927 downtown fire and retain high integrity. It includes the bank, mercantile, lodge hall, garages and theater that served the town's economy. The boundaries take in all but one of the town's pre-1940 commercial buildings that retain integrity.","narrative":"This block of Main Street in Point Arena, California, forms a small downtown commercial district of thirty buildings, twenty-one of which contribute to its historic character. The street slopes downhill from north to south, and most buildings are one or two stories with stucco walls, straight cornice or parapet lines, and storefronts with recessed entrances, transoms and display windows. Much of the district was rebuilt after a major fire in 1927. The Bank of America Building, built in reinforced concrete around 1912, helped stop that fire from spreading south. Other notable buildings include the Spanish Colonial Revival I.O.O.F. Hall, the large Point Arena Mercantile Company store of 1928, a theater, and several garages and service stations that reflect the growing role of the automobile. The two oldest buildings, the 1867 hotel and the Giannini Building, were remodeled and no longer contribute. Retail trade, from 1893 to 1940, is the basis for the district's significance.","period_of_significance":"1893-1940","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"The Standard Oil Station at 165 Main Street is described as vacant and in disrepair. Other buildings, such as the bank, hotel, theater and I.O.O.F. Hall, remain in commercial or original use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.504863-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/90001364.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001364/6ddc1bbc4b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001364/6ddc1bbc4b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Almonroth","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_Street_Historic_Commercial_District-16.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Almonroth</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_Street_Historic_Commercial_District-16.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857662","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Street_Historic_Commercial_District_(Point_Arena,_California)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6736116"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/mendocino-county/main-street-historic-commercial-district-90001364/"}
