It is also notable for its ground floor of fine Chaumont limestone under a wood-frame upper story. It was the last residence in the village built of local stone.","narrative":"Built between 1895 and 1902 on Washington Street in Chaumont, this two and one-half story house has a foundation and first story of coursed, quarry-faced Chaumont limestone, with wood-frame upper levels clad in square-cut and fish-scale shingles. Arthur Caron bought the lot in 1895 and began construction, but financial trouble forced a sale and the stone shell stood unfinished until Henry George, a village hardware merchant, bought and completed it in 1902. The design blends Queen Anne elements such as gabled projections and stickwork gable details with the square plan and hipped roof that foreshadowed four-square houses. Inside, a side-hall plan, pocket doors and original oak woodwork survive. A one and one-half story carriage barn and a limestone carriage step also contribute. The house is regarded as the last residence in the village built with local stone as its principal material.","period_of_significance":"1885-1902","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Turn-of-the-century eclectic with Queen Anne influences, anticipating the four-square house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Residential use; condition listed as good, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.161485-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/90001338.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313164","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_House_(Chaumont,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5540767"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/george-house-90001338/"}
