The present building was rebuilt in 1867-1870 on the site of an 1830 brick church.","why_significant":"The church is one of four that represent the Pennsylvania German settlement of southwest Montgomery County in the early nineteenth century. It is also a fine example of a simply styled village Gothic Revival church of the mid-1800s. Its alterations reflect the congregation's adaptation to social and economic change.","narrative":"Emmanuel's Evangelical Lutheran Church is a two-story brick Gothic Revival building on West Warren Street in Germantown, Ohio. Its cornerstone was laid in 1867 and it was dedicated in 1870, replacing a one-story brick church of 1830 that proved structurally unsound. A 140-foot spire was added in 1880. The sanctuary sits on the second floor, reached by twin spiral staircases from the first-story foyer. Pointed arch windows, brick drip molds and corbel tables give the exterior a simple but elegant character. The architect and builder are unknown, though the design closely resembles St. Jacob's Lutheran Church in Miamisburg. The congregation grew out of the Pennsylvania German settlement that began in the valley in 1804, and it first shared a union church with a German Reformed congregation until the two split in 1830. The building is considered the best reminder of the settlement-era ethnic character of Germantown. Later stained glass, furnishings and 1959 additions record how the congregation changed over time.","period_of_significance":"1867-1900","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-Nineteenth century Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use; one-story brick additions were built on the left and right sides in 1959.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.453828-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/90001292.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001292/195e0d4965-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001292/195e0d4965-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pjsham","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emmanuel%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pjsham</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emmanuel%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985929","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuel%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5373106"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/montgomery-county/emmanuels-evangelical-lutheran-church-90001292/"}
