Page with William John Sutor.","why_significant":"The house is an unusual example of a vernacular dwelling with Queen Anne design elements. It is believed to have been the only brick residence in Hyde Park when built, and one of two in the original subdivision, reflecting the land company's improvement requirements. It is also the only remaining Austin residence known to have been occupied by Page, a subcontractor on the State Capitol.","narrative":"Built in 1893 at the corner of Avenue G and East 40th Street in Austin's Hyde Park, this two-story brick house combines a plain, rectangular vernacular form with Queen Anne details. Its most distinctive feature is a two-tier corner porch shaped like a tower with a steep pyramidal roof, supported by turned-wood columns. Load-bearing brick walls, segmentally arched windows and a gable roof of standing-seam metal complete the design. Christopher H. Page, an English-born stonemason who worked as a subcontractor on the State Capitol, designed it and did the brickwork, with William John Sutor supplying the woodwork. It is believed to have been the only brick home in Hyde Park at the time, and it reflects the land company's requirement that buyers make significant improvements. It is the only remaining Austin residence known to have been occupied by Page. Later additions at the rear do not greatly affect its historic character. It was listed for local architectural significance.","period_of_significance":"1893","architect_builder":"Page, Christopher H. (designer); Sutor, William John (contractor)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition despite a moderate level of alterations; still used as a single dwelling. Additions of one and two stories were made at the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.383423-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/9702/40970291/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90001186.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001186/1543f24475-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001186/1543f24475-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dtobias","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paige-gilbert-house-austin.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dtobias</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paige-gilbert-house-austin.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970291","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page%E2%80%93Gilbert_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7124208"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/page-gilbert-house-90001186/"}
