Mansbendel's work appears in residences, public institutions and historic sites across Texas. The nomination cited Criteria B and C, but the Keeper later removed Criterion B.","narrative":"Built about 1925 in Austin's newly subdivided Shadow Lawn Addition, this two-story Tudor Revival house at 3824 Avenue F was the home of woodcarver Peter Mansbendel and his wife Clotilde Shipe, daughter of Hyde Park developer Monroe M. Shipe. The frame house has stucco walls, decorative half-timbering, steeply pitched gables, patterned brick chimneys and casement windows with diamond-patterned panes. Mansbendel, born in Basle, Switzerland, in 1883, carved the bargeboards, the figural newel post and the staircase balusters, and added ceiling beams, fireplace decoration and bas-relief plaster panels, including aquatic scenes in the bathroom. His work also appears in homes, public buildings and historic sites across Texas, among them doors for the Spanish Governor's Palace and Mission San Jose in San Antonio. The house remains largely unchanged, and a detached garage/apartment with matching detailing contributes to the property. It was listed for its architecture and its association with Mansbendel's craftsmanship.","period_of_significance":"c.1925-1940","architect_builder":"Mansbendel, Peter (builder)","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a private residence, in good condition and virtually unchanged since completion.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.556193-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/9703/40970333/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90001183.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001183/f312dfba07-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001183/f312dfba07-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dtobias","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mansbendel-house-austin.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dtobias</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mansbendel-house-austin.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970333","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_and_Clotilde_Shipe_Mansbendel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7177865"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/mansbendel-peter-and-clotilde-shipe-house-90001183/"}
