It reflects the land company's strategy of encouraging large, showy houses to attract investors to the new subdivision. It retains a remarkable degree of historic character and is significant locally for architecture.","narrative":"Built in 1894 at 3913 Avenue C in Austin, this two-story frame house is an early and prominent Queen Anne residence in the Hyde Park subdivision. George Smith bought the lots from the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Land Company and was required to build a home worth at least $1,500; he hired local builder John Geggie. The house has a two-tiered front porch with chamfered columns, jigsawn trim and a geometric balustrade, plus a 2 1/2-story polygonal tower with an octagonal roof and a steep hipped roof of pressed-metal shingles. A board-and-batten carriage house also survives. Later owners included Louis Marcuse, a Prussian-born grocer, and his family, who lived there until 1968. After the city condemned the house, new owners restored it, rebuilding the porches, balustrades and fencing from historic photographs. It is recognized for its local architectural significance and its connection to the early marketing of Hyde Park.","period_of_significance":"1894","architect_builder":"Geggie, John (builder)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as virtually unaltered and in good condition; restored after having been condemned by the city, and currently used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.561846-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/9702/40970289/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90001180.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001180/337abef8b3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001180/337abef8b3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dtobias","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith-marcuse-lowry-house-austin.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dtobias</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith-marcuse-lowry-house-austin.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970289","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith%E2%80%93Marcuse%E2%80%93Lowry_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7544921"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/smith-marcuse-lowry-house-90001180/"}
