Builder Elling A. Ellingson constructed it.","why_significant":"The house is a fine, highly crafted example of Queen Anne style and one of the oldest dwellings in Hyde Park. It reflects the early development period, when deed restrictions required large, costly homes near trolley lines. It was also the home of Anna E. Walker, who helped organize the Texas Woman Suffrage Association and served as its state treasurer.","narrative":"Standing at the northwest corner of Avenue C and 39th Street in Austin's Hyde Park, this 2 1/2-story house was built in 1894 for photographer William Jones Oliphant and his wife Alice. Builder Elling A. Ellingson completed it under a contract that called for quality lumber, California weatherboarding and a shingle roof. Its modified L-plan form carries a steeply pitched hipped roof, a front-gabled wing with cutaway corners, imbricated shingles, decorative bargeboards and two porches with spindled balconies. It was among the large homes required by deed restrictions in Hyde Park's earliest development, meant to reassure investors about the new subdivision. Later, Anna E. Walker owned the house from 1914 until her death in 1948. She helped organize the Texas Woman Suffrage Association and served as its state treasurer, and her husband Lewis headed a railroad based in Oklahoma. Renovations began in 1974, and the house received local historic zoning in 1978.","period_of_significance":"1894 (architecture) and 1914-1940 (Criterion B), as amended by the Keeper; the original form stated 1936 and 1906-1940","architect_builder":"Ellingson, E.A. (builder)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; vernacular, modified L-plan","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Current use is a single dwelling. The house was renovated after 1974 and zoned Historic by the City of Austin in 1978.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.748489-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/9703/40970352/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90001177.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001177/d43a6c4c3f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001177/d43a6c4c3f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dtobias","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oliphant-walker-house-austin.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dtobias</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oliphant-walker-house-austin.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970352","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliphant%E2%80%93Walker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7086949"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/oliphant-walker-house-90001177/"}
