It forms the historic core of the upland crossroads community, with buildings dating from about 1780 to 1910.","why_significant":"The district is described as the most intact collection of buildings in Palisades's crossroads community. It shows the taste and prosperity of middle-class residents in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It includes vernacular Georgian, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate buildings, and it illustrates the influence of the picturesque movement on Hudson Valley architecture.","narrative":"Along one block of Closter Road and one block of Oak Tree Road, the district preserves the core of the upland crossroads community in the hamlet of Palisades, Rockland County. Its 19 properties include mostly frame houses, a former Methodist Episcopal church of 1859, a former schoolhouse now a community center, two commercial buildings and a burying ground with graves dating from 1774. The buildings date from about 1780 to 1910 and show a progression of styles: vernacular Georgian, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate. The c.1780 Trenchard House is one of the few surviving eighteenth-century farmhouses in the area and shows English rather than Dutch building influences. The c.1840 country store is the oldest surviving commercial building in the surrounding resource area. Settled as farmland, the area grew into a middle-class neighborhood of merchants, craftsmen and tradesmen once railroads opened and New Yorkers came for summer homes. Level terrain gave regular siting and unified streetscapes that keep a nineteenth-century character.","period_of_significance":"c.1780-1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Georgian, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Most contributing buildings are well preserved with minor alterations. The former Methodist Episcopal Church, the former schoolhouse and a former store have been adapted to new uses, and a library and community center occupy two of the buildings.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.830468-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/90001014.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001014/c78cabf705-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001014/c78cabf705-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CLOSTER_ROAD-OAK_TREE_ROAD_HISTORIC_DISTRICT,_PALISADES,_ROCKLAND_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314524","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closter_Road%E2%80%93Oak_Tree_Road_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5135456"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/closter-road-oak-tree-road-historic-district-90001014/"}
