Its present form dates from about 1865-1870, built onto an older dwelling.","why_significant":"The property is presented as a distinctive, intact example of a late-nineteenth-century residence combining a regional Anglo-American side-passage house type with Gothic Revival exterior detailing. It shows how local builders applied picturesque styling to a traditional plan as Palisades changed from a farming district into a suburban retreat. The surviving outbuilding adds to the understanding of residential groupings in the area.","narrative":"Set on a small rise on a wooded 2.36-acre lot beside Route 9W in Palisades, this clapboard house grew in stages. Local tradition holds that it began as a one-room structure in the late eighteenth century, received a dining room addition in the early nineteenth century, and gained its large northern section, with stairhall and parlor, between 1865 and 1870 after J.W. Haring bought the property in 1859. The L-shaped house has a cross-gabled front, a bracketed porch, a bay window with scroll-saw trim and drip moldings over some windows, all in a vernacular Gothic Revival manner. Inside, the detailing is Italianate, including a marble fireplace and plaster ceiling medallion. Beneath the picturesque styling, the plan still follows the common two-story, side-passage house type of the lower Hudson Valley. A two-story gabled barn from the third quarter of the nineteenth century survives to the northwest. Together they illustrate local building traditions and changing fashion in the community.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival (vernacular), with Italianate and Greek Revival interior detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, as it was originally; condition given as good, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.11083-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/90001010.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001010/99b4d76fe2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/90001010/99b4d76fe2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PalisadesNY_HaringEberleHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PalisadesNY_HaringEberleHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314514","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haring-Eberle_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5657594"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/haring-eberle-house-90001010/"}
