It also marks a major expansion of an important early Perryton business, the Plainview Hardware and Furniture Company, at the start of the Depression. It retains an unusual degree of architectural integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1930 at 210 South Main Street in Perryton, Texas, this two-story Art Deco building was constructed for the Plainview Hardware and Furniture Company. Amarillo architect Joseph Champ Berry of Berry and Hatch designed it with a reinforced concrete frame, a carved limestone front with bas relief geometric patterns, brick sides, copper-framed display windows and Belgian black marble bases. Inside, a freight elevator, oak woodwork and hand-painted back walls survive. The company began in Plainview, Oklahoma, in 1910 and moved to Perryton after the railroad arrived in 1919. The new store opened in December 1930 at an estimated cost of $35,000 and became one of the town's largest employers. Its Art Deco style was unusual for a small Panhandle community, and it represented a bold investment at the onset of the Depression. The company operated for 76 years before closing its inventory sales in 1986. The building now houses a gift shop and tea room and keeps a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"1930-1940","architect_builder":"Berry, Joseph Champ (Berry and Hatch, Amarillo)","architectural_style":"Art Deco","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The main floor is now a gift shop and the mezzanine is a tea room. The building was rehabilitated in 1988 and is described as well preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.219308-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/9731/40973129/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/90000904.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973129","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plainview_Hardware_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q54871523"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/ochiltree-county/plainview-hardware-company-building-90000904/"}
