It looks like a residence but was a multi-use building, and its original plan, trim and much of its fabric survive despite a 1983 arson fire and the restoration that followed.","narrative":"Standing on a corner lot along the main road between Roslyn and Mineola, this two-story clapboard building was erected around 1870 as a small hotel and saloon. Its Italianate styling, with a low hipped roof, deep bracketed cornice, wide porch and round-arched double doors, makes it look like a house, but it also held a bar room, rented transient rooms upstairs and living quarters for the owner's family. John Warmuth is the earliest known occupant, and later owners ran a saloon, then a confectionery, and rented space to varied tenants, including a church and a synagogue. After years of neglect and a vacant period, an arsonist set fire to it in 1983. A restoration in 1983-84 rebuilt the rear wing and roof and repaired the porch and stair rail. The building was listed for its architecture, as a rare surviving small Victorian hotel on Long Island and a distinctive local example of Italianate design that keeps its original plan and many details.","period_of_significance":"c. 1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored in 1983-84 after an arson fire; it was vacant from 1979 to 1983.
