The house was built by Solomon Warlick, a wagonmaker and planter.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the finest surviving Federal-style dwellings in Catawba County, with well-detailed woodwork, grained wainscot, and much original hardware. It also argues the farmstead is a typical and unusually well-preserved nineteenth and early twentieth century county farm, significant for agriculture, and that the outbuildings represent the county's rural property types.","narrative":"Built around 1820 by Solomon Warlick, a wagonmaker and planter, the Warlick-Huffman House is a two-story frame Federal-style dwelling on a knoll above the Jacob Fork River in southwest Catawba County. Its interior keeps a grained wainscot, a carved parlor mantel with fluted pilasters, plaster ceiling medallion, and much original hardware. A detached one-and-one-half story kitchen, a root cellar, and a group of late nineteenth and early twentieth century outbuildings, including a corn crib, tack house, and chicken coops, remain on the grounds. Warlick sold the farm in 1871 to Miles Huffman, and the Huffman family held it until 1939. The property is valued for its architectural quality, as one of the county's finest Federal dwellings, and for its intact farmstead, which illustrates agricultural life in the county from the antebellum period through the early twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1820-1939","architect_builder":"Solomon Warlick (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The house remains intact in its undisturbed rural setting; a 1950s cinderblock house stands nearby as a noncontributing resource.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.416178-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7174/47717406/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/90000862.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717406","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlick%E2%80%93Huffman_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18159139"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/catawba-county/warlick-huffman-farm-90000862/"}
